Stepping Up: How Might Current Events Impact Our Teaching?

Teaching in troubling times always presents challenges. Summer 2020, however, appears to be raising the level of challenge to new heights--and so we scramble. What's the best way to connect with students when a deadly virus keeps everyone apart? How can we focus on course objectives when each day's news highlights death, systematic racism, social injustice, and civic unrest? We wonder--is the world around us just a distraction, or should we somehow integrate it into our teaching?

Supporting our students and their learning this summer is no easy task. The Center for Teaching and Learning and Serve-Learn-Sustain will co-host two virtual conversations about the traumatic circumstances our nation is experiencing and their impact on the teaching choices we make. The conversations will take place on Friday, June 5, 2020 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, and Wednesday, June 10 from 3:30-4:30 pm. Might we have an opportunity to shape our teaching in ways we didn't expect? What would we like our students to learn from our time together this summer?

We'll prompt our conversation with a few campus voices, then invite you to share your ideas. Please join us!
