Creating web accessible course content is a pedagogical best practice when it comes to sharing materials online. Video subtitles or audio transcripts, for instance, make it possible for learners with hearing impairments to access course materials; these same features also allow students on public transit to review course content while commuting, even if the environment is loud or they forgot headphones.

As of April 26, 2026, accessible web content won’t just be best practice—it will be a required practice. Federal revisions to Title II state that all public entities must ensure their web content and mobile applications are accessible to individuals with disabilities by the April deadline. For Georgia Tech instructors, this means all Canvas sites, course files, and media must meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. At the Center for Teaching and Learning, we want to help all of Georgia Tech’s instructors create accessible Canvas courses and course materials.

The Accessibility in Canvas Courses Checklist

We created the Accessibility in Canvas Courses Checklist to help Georgia Tech instructors tackle course accessibility one step at a time. The checklist, which is available through Service Now, walks instructors through common accessibility issues in Canvas as well as ways (and tools) to fix each issue.

Whether you’re updating existing materials or designing a new course, this checklist will help you improve readability, navigation, and compliance with the latest WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards.

Course Accessibility Events

The Center offers frequent events designed to help Georgia Tech instructors create accessible course materials, including workshops on creating accessible PDFs using LaTeX, our Accessibility Quest workshops, and our Accessibility 101 series. We also offer opportunities for faculty to gather and informally discuss their own strategies and experiences through our Roundtable series. You can view our upcoming workshops on our events page; accessibility-related events will be marked.

Consultations

Do you have questions about how to create an accessible Canvas course or course materials? We’re happy to help; we offer one-on-one faculty consultations. If your question falls outside of our scope, we can direct you to Tech’s Digital Learning Team or Center for Inclusive Design and Innovation.

Additional Tips and Resources

We’ve put together five tips for creating accessible courses, covering everything from alt text to color contrast to captions. In addition, we’ve compiled additional resources from Georgia Tech and beyond covering topics such as LaTeX accessibility, automated alt text generation, and accessible equations. Keep in mind that these tools and resources are ever-evolving to help instructors meet the new requirements.
