Assessment in the Age of AI
 

Technological advances like ChatGPT require us to transform the way we assess student learning. While technology may seem like an enemy we’re fighting against in our courses, it also offers us opportunities to transform teaching and learning. This year’s Teaching with Technology Summer Institute will focus on using campus technologies to develop innovative assessments that both engage students and more authentically measure their learning. Participants will explore best practices to design assessments that deter cheating and gain a deeper awareness of learning technologies available at Georgia Tech to facilitate innovative assessments while minimizing grading and feedback load. By the end of the institute, participants will have selected a technology and begun building an innovative assessment for use in a course. 

This four-day institute will be conducted in a hybrid synchronous format. The first two days will take place in person, and lunch will be provided. The last two days will take place in a synchronous Zoom format to allow our multiple technology presenters to attend. 

Participants in this Institute will:  

  1. Discuss the challenges AI poses to traditional forms of assessment 

  1. Employ best practices in assessment design  

  1. Identify campus learning technologies that allow for innovative, authentic assessment of student learning while minimizing grading load 

  1. Select a technology to use in a course 

  1. Begin designing an assessment using the selected technology

Workshop Highlights:

We will meet for three hours each day with a half-hour break for lunch. You can expect to engage in the following ways: 

Day 1: A Challenge and an Opportunity 

  • Discuss the challenges AI poses to our traditional assessment techniques 

  • Examine the reasons students turn to AI to complete their assessments 

  • Identify opportunities to transform traditional assessments into authentic measurements of student learning 

  • Select an assessment you want to (re)design in light of AI 

Day 2: Best Practices in Assessment Design 

  • Lower the stakes through formative assessments 

  • Design clear, purposeful assessments 

  • Offer multiple modes of assessment 

  • Provide opportunities for students to receive feedback 

Day 3: Campus Learning Technologies 

  • Explore five campus learning technologies that can be used to create innovative assessments while reducing grading and feedback load 

  • Ask questions of technology experts 

  • Discuss example assessments  

  • Select a technology to explore further 

Day 4: Designing Your Assessment 

  • Schedule one-on-ones with technology experts to learn more about the technology 

  • Create a plan for developing and implementing your assessment 

  • Discuss your assessment with peers 

  • Receive feedback from the facilitator
