Gauging students’ prior knowledge of course content allows you to help students make connections to support new learning by building on what they already know. Assessment prior to instruction also reveals any gaps or misunderstandings students might have that could interfere with their learning the new content. Having an accurate understanding of your students’ starting point allows you to more effectively support students with insufficient background knowledge and foster students’ own awareness of their own learning and growth, among other benefits. In this workshop, you’ll explore methods of assessing prior knowledge and how to use these assessment results to adapt your instruction.
After this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Explain the importance of assessing prior knowledge.
- Select from various assessment techniques (and be able to find existing instruments).
- Analyze and respond to assessment data.
