Georgia Tech Community of Practice on Transformative Teaching with the SDGs

This Community of Practice (CoP) is associated with Georgia Tech’s Undergraduate Sustainability Education Committee (USEC) and is facilitated by CTL’s Assistant Director, Faculty Development for Sustainability Education Initiatives. While many participants are recipients of Undergraduate Sustainability Education Innovation Awards, the group is open to all Georgia Tech instructors. The CoP launched with an August 2023 workshop and it includes several cohorts of about 10 faculty each that meet every 2-3 weeks. Our work together in Spring 2024 will focus on advancing collaborative initiatives developed by CoP members that aim to celebrate and amplify excellence in SDG course design and teaching and engage more faculty and students in Education for Sustainable Development.

Georgia-Wide, Multi-Institutional Community of Practice on College Teaching with the SDGs

This group launched with a planning meeting in May 2022 organized by members of the RCE Greater Atlanta’s Higher Education Leadership Community (HELC). Georgia Tech’s CTL leads a planning team that includes additional GT faculty along with faculty/staff at UGA and Kennesaw State University. The planning team polls participants to identify topics of interest, recruits presenters, and manages communications.

As of December 2023, this initiative had presented six 90-minute sessions providing guidance for several dozen Georgia college instructors on the following aspects of SDG teaching: interactive online tools; linking local and global initiatives; interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary learning; community-engaged learning; empowering students to lead change; and strategies for addressing barriers.

Spring 2024 sessions are scheduled for Feb. 2 and Mar. 29, 2:30-4:00pm. The February session will focus on connecting SDG teaching to networks & events like SDG Week, Earth Day, and the Worldwide Climate and Justice Week. The March session will explore how to incorporate the action or implementation component of Education for Sustainable Development into our teaching.
